Right. So the worst of their fight had been cleared up. Jesse-- well, maybe it would've been better to let her and James coast on the current ceasefire for a while. Find their equilibrium again.

Except she kept coming back to concerns about what could happen in the meanwhile. What if the island found a way to tell James about the Bureau? He wouldn't have all the context. And-- well, it was entirely possible he'd break up with her over this anyway. But if he didn't have all--

Eugh.

She had spent days rehearsing the speech in her head. And yet, as she arrived at James's doorstep early that Thursday, she couldn't help but hope he'd gone back to Wakanda early.

Please?

She raised her hand and knocked.

Come on...

[[ for him ]]

comments

It'd been... a couple of years since that one time James showed up for Thanksgiving out of nowhere. And Jesse hadn't really wanted to impose herself on him, with everything that was going on with him in Wakanda and everything and-- and somewhere around noon she'd finally found the courage to send off a few texts.

And then she'd rushed around the house, cleaned up some stuff, put in a delivery order at the Thai place because Thai seemed... fine? For Thanksgiving?

I have no idea.

All the rushing around saved her from thinking too much about Dylan. About how he was probably still in a coma, somewhere... somewhere in the Oldest House, with the Hiss sliding around the halls, and...

Luckily, James knocked before she could get drawn too far into that thought.

She opened the door.
James's apartment had been largely abandoned for years, and he hadn't exactly made it homey before he left. So there was really only one solution, at least as far as a girl like Jesse went: a trip to IKEA, to at least get him some plants.

And furniture.

And weird little things. (She loved the weird little things.)

Being the disgustingly early riser that she was, it was probably no surprise that they turned up early, walking onto the premises of the island and its massive Swedish monolith a few minutes before opening time. "I always wonder who exactly shops here," she mused. "I think there's actually a special Portalocity station assigned to just the isle?"

[[ for him ]]

comments

Jesse's first instinct had been to walk until they found the nearest Portalocity station, but somehow the universe - or the Oldest House - had intervened.

They walked, and the world slowly warped around them. The smell of pine trees permeated the air, hot coals and warm coffee. For a moment, it was as if the ocean itself lapped gently through the skein of the heavens around them, washing away the taste of rough and jagged Russia.

Then that, too, faded.

And suddenly there was asphalt under Jesse's feet, the school's spire towering not far from her view.

"Huh," she said quietly.
'Twas the day. Back at Town Hall, a group of Fandomites were scribbling away, putting their thoughts to paper about the heroic finale that would save them all from their own worst nightmares.

A final battle that would take place... right here, in the Park, by the playground. The strange, shadowy creatures that had invaded the island found themselves drawn here inexplicably. Some staggered. Some ran. Some flitted like whisps through the air.

(The more left unsaid about that marinaded lobster, the better.)

It was time, oh Heroes of Fandom.

---

Hello, Fighty Preplay People! The conceit of this particular fight is that it bends and changes according to what Story Team is doing.

The rules:

- The fight must stay in the playground.
- Each character can have a moment of Divine Inspiration - a flashback to a good time in their life that gives them determination, a vision of someone they love at a time when they are just about to lose, a sudden and inexplicable realization of a weak spot (that you are free to come up with and mod yourself).
- Tropes! Plot armor, lampshading and idiot balls are at your narrative disposal, should it be funny/interesting/uplifting to invoke at that particular point. You will all also have miraculous escapes, if you wish.
- There may or may not be a chicken kickline on the field on liveplay day. Feel free to react accordingly.

And that's it! Ping in facing off with a creature of your own devising - it can be anything, as long as it's Teh Evil and could have come out of someone's creative work. Or just ping in, in which case I'll come up with something.

Have fun!

comments

It had been weeks since he'd made it into his office: as a cat, office paperwork had been pretty far down on his list of priorities.

He sorted the Shenanigan swag into categories of "hideous", "hideous but workable", and "my eyes, my eyes" and then started on the correspondence in his inbox.

Letters from alumni, solicitations from charitable groups he'd never heard of (Orphaned Garden Gnomes of France could not possibly be real), a new school brochure about something called "Fandom University" and a chirpy note from the president of the school board--

He blinked and reread that. Not as fast as Jesse would've liked to see it go, but fast enough she knew it'd be gone by tomorrow, or most of it.

Then we'll just have sludge.

She let out a little breath as she stared out over the ocean.

I'm going to have to have a long conversation with the school board about the meaning of 'weather machine maintenance', she thought.

She looked down at the sand, and...

Wait, is that...?

She reached for a chunk of metal sticking out just above the surface, and gave it a good old yank.

"'WEATHER CORRECT'," she read - had to be 'weather corrector' - and turned it over in her hands.
Jesse hadn't really done Thanksgiving in a long time. For obvious reasons, really. She just had this one little moment of ceremony to herself, as she ate her simple meat-and-potatoes meal at the dinner table.

"This one's for you, Dylan," she said quietly, to her fork. "Maybe next year will be the year we can share it."

At least she'd found him, this year.

Just... everything else was a work in progress.

She swallowed the bite and reached for her glass of water.

"To next year," she said quietly.

[[ open ]]

comments

Jesse wasn't a party person.

She'd still spent about an hour or two trying to talk herself into going, but that many people in one place... dressing up and doing small talk? Even after all this time, that still sounded daunting.

And exhausting.

Instead, she was on the couch of her apartment, fiddling with the new phone Barry had made her. No amount of pressing buttons had made it explode, so that made it... safe, at least.

But what she really wanted to know was if she could use it to contact the Bureau. None of the few regular phone numbers for the FBC worked, but with the Oldest House in lockdown, that hadn't seemed likely anyway. Still. She was poking through the old 90s phone that had patched her through to Emily the first time.

There had to be something here. A number, or... a chip, or something, or...

She could ask Barry. But she'd already lied to him enough.

Fine. She'd just spend her evening trying things. Something had to work.

[[ open, sure ]]

comments

Jesse had lived in enough fully-furnished apartments in her life that waking up in a new bed wasn't as weird as it could have been. She did wonder, faintly, who had lived here - why there was a bump somewhere in the floor in the living room that looked like someone had sat there for far too long, and why the bathroom smelled so strongly of bleach.

But only faintly. Mostly it was nice to have a bed again. Even the Bureau had still been busy finding her living arrangements with the building on lockdown, right before she vanished.

She sat up and rubbed her eyes, considering the largely-empty bedroom.

It's not like I have anything to put in it.

Well, except for that 90s phone from Town Hall. It now sat on her nightstand, looking exactly as old-fashioned as the rotary phones back at the bureau. It wasn't ringing. Right now, there wasn't even a dial tone.

Come on, Emily.
